Movie Fashion Inspiration: Grease

Movie Fashion Inspiration: Grease

Grease is the word.

In this week’s installment of 10 More Movies for Fashion Inspiration, we’ll be looking at the fashion from the film Grease.

Although it was filmed in 1978, this movie musical is set in the 1950s, and features fabulous ’50s fashion. The film follows good girl Sandy (Olivia Newton John) and bad boy Danny (John Travolta), two teenagers who fall in love over the summer. Come fall, after discovering they now attend the same high school, the two have to decide if they should rekindle their romance or go their separate ways.

Sandy’s style in the film starts out sweet and innocent, with full skirts and sweater sets, but turns bad girl chic by the ending credits. Her look is definitely inspiring! However, Sandy is not the only one with great style in this film — the four Pink Ladies each have their own individual look. Their style is a little bolder with fitted pencil skirts, cropped pants, cat-eyed glasses and, of course, their signature pink jackets.

If you want to try and copy the fun outfits found in Grease, check out these three outfits inspired by the film:

Outfit #1: Summer Lovin’

Products: Dress – ModCloth, Cardigan – Amazon, Necklace – Urban Outfitters, Shoes – Sole Society

This outfit captures the innocent look Sandy has in the beginning of the film. The ’50s-inspired fit-and-flare dress has a conservative, classic vibe, yet is still ultra-feminine and figure flattering. A yellow sweater provides a cheerful pop of color, while coordinating, bow-adorned flats and a golden heart locket finish the sweet and girly look.

Outfit #2: Pink Lady

Products: Blouse – H&M, Jeans – Forever 21, Cardigan – H&M, Shoes – Jessica Simpson, Sunglasses – NA-KD

Instead of going with a literal pink jacket, I chose a cardigan in a soft pink color to recreate the Pink Ladies look in a more subtle way. A simple yet chic blouse with a tie-neck detail and a pair of cropped jeans capture 1950s casual style. Slip on these adorable pink flats and matching cat-eye sunglasses and you’ll fit right in with Rizzo, Frenchy, and the rest of the Pink Ladies.

Outfit #3: You Better Shape Up

Products: Top – ModCloth, Pants – Topshop, Jacket – Nordstrom, Shoes – Sole Society, Ring – Barse

By the end of the film, Sandy’s style has changed from good girl to badass bombshell. This look is an interpretation of the last outfit she wears in the movie. This black off-the shoulder top shows just enough skin in a fun shape. Cigarette pants, which were popular in the ’50s, really showcase these red heeled mules. Add a tough, faux leather moto jacket and accessorize with a bold ring to complete the look.

Feeling inspired?

What do you think of the different styles found in Grease? Do you like Sandy’s style? Who is your favorite Pink Lady? Do you think the outfits capture the look and feel of the film? Leave a comment and let us know!

The Top 10 College Party Songs of 2018

The Top 10 College Party Songs of 2018

Wondering what the name of that song from the party last night was? Got you covered! Read on for the 10 iconic party songs that rocked 2018.

2018 marks a year of highs and lows for music with several artists passing away and new artists blossoming. As another year of spectacular and not-so spectacular music comes to a close, we want to reminisce about some of the most popular party songs we heard at every get-together on campus this year. 2018 was the year of pop-rap combos and some unpredictable music collabs that none of us saw coming.

To wrap it all up, here are the top 10 party songs of 2018:

1. “Look Alive” by BlocBoy JB and Drake

I don’t know about you, but I definitely didn’t see this collab coming… BlocBoy JB came out of nowhere with his big break happening after the release of “Shoot.” Originally from Memphis, BlocBoy JB started a dance craze in his town and kept the fire burning with another release, “Rover.” It wasn’t until after “Rover” that he caught Drake’s eye. As a result, “Look Alive” was released as a sequel to “Rover.” The difference? Drake!

2. “God’s Plan” by Drake

Drake made 2018 his year. One of his many 2018 hits, “God’s Plan” had its video shot in Miami where many music videos take place. The catch? Drake spent around a million dollars filming and donating money to different organizations around the city (Miami Senior High School, Sabor Tropical Super Market, Women’s homeless shelter, Lotus House Miami and Destiny James, University of Miami student). As a student at the University of Miami, I was casually walking across campus and stumbled upon Drake shooting his music video on our campus after generously donating $50,000 of scholarship money to one of my classmates. You can understand why “God’s Plan” was played at Miami parties for months to follow…

3. “Nice for What” by Drake

Yup, it’s another Drake track. He topped the charts again in 2018 with “Nice for What.” This song drew a lot of positive attention for its lyrics dedicated to praising women who work extremely hard each day. “Nice for What” discusses different situations faced by modern-day women. Strategically released in a year of social movements and female empowerment, “Nice for What” is a favorite for good reason.

4. “Stir Fry” by Migos

“Stir Fry” doesn’t have empowering lyrics like the previous songs but is still a classic party song of 2018. While dropping a number of fast food references backed by a drum-heavy upbeat track, Migos flaunt their wealthy status through the song. They collaborated with Pharrell Williams for “Stir Fry,” who gave their track an unusual pop beat to replace their typical trap-style music.

5. “Finesse (Remix)” by Bruno Mars and Cardi B

Once again, two mega-popular artists collab for an upbeat track with a great beat. It’s a recipe for 2018 party song success. Throughout the song, Bruno Mars talks about going out with his partner, dressed up and “drippin in finesse.” For Cardi B’s section, she takes it back to her past in the Bronx and talks about her history as a stripper and how she became famous. Although “Finesse” seems casual and playful, it has personal connections and hits the spot in 2018.

6. “One Kiss” by Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa

What’s a party without a Calvin Harris beat? The king of deep house music, Calvin Harris created “One Kiss,” a love song about how one kiss can make you fall in love. Yes, it’s sappy, but it’s ideal for the party setting. Make sure to add this hit to your next party playlist.

7. “The Middle” by Zedd, Maren Morris, Grey

Imagine a chill kickback with some friends and beats. That’s the vibe of “The Middle” for you. Relaxed and easy-going while also having a strong dance beat, “The Middle” sends the message of resolving a conflict between two loved ones with the phrase “Oh baby, why don’t you just meet me in the middle.”

8. “I Like It” by Cardi B

Cardi B KILLED the music scene this year with her “I Like It” track featuring Spanish and English. Throughout the song, Cardi B sings about her favorite things like money, deals, “stunting,” “shining,” diamonds, Balenciagas, texts from exes and of course, proving people wrong. Talk about motivation to be successful! “I Like It” is a great hype up song for a pre-game and the party itself. I can’t even count the number of times I heard this song at a party this year.

9. “Taste” by Tyga and Offset

Another party song with a strong beat and rap, “Taste” is a collab between Tyga and Offset singing about girls and partying. A classic party song with a classic party message, “Taste” will absolutely get you in the mood to have a great night.

10. “Like I Do” by David Guetta, Martin Garrix, Brooks

Every party needs its deep house beat songs. “Like I Do” is another example of a top 2018 party hit with the dance club beat. But don’t stereotype this song as another EDM piece, “Like I Do” has funky elements that make it an absolute hit at every party.

'90s Fashion Icons: Julia Roberts

’90s Fashion Icons: Julia Roberts
{$inline_image}

Our favorite “Pretty Woman” never goes out of style. Here’s how to get her look!

No decade’s style is quite as nostalgic for us as the 1990s which is exactly why ’90s everything is back in! Over the past few weeks, we’ve been covering nine fashion icons of the ’90s you need to know about if you want to get on board with the ’90s trends that are coming back.

In case you missed it, last week was all about Liv Tyler, the music video starlet turned decorated movie actress. This time around, it’s all about one of America’s favorite movie stars of all time, Julia Roberts.

Julia Roberts Biography

View the original article to see embedded media.

Julia comes from a family of actors. Both of her parents worked as actors and ran an acting workshop when she was a kid, and her siblings act, too.

But Julia was never trained in acting at school. She actually wanted to be a veterinarian before moving to NYC to pursue modeling.

Her first major role was in 1989’s Steel Magnolias. She was nominated for an Oscar!

But it was a role that came one year later that cemented Julia’s star status and made for one of Hollywood’s most famous and beloved romcoms: Pretty Woman. Starring alongside Richard Gere, Julia’s performance in the romantic movie became and instant hit. Julia was nominated for another Oscar.

She starred in several more successful movies throughout the ’90s like Hook, My Best Friend’s Wedding, and Notting Hill.

She would finally win an Academy Award in 2001, start her own production company, and go on to become one of the most influential (and highest paid!) actresses in Hollywood.

Julia Roberts’ Style in the ’90s

She’s loved today for her talent, personality, and of course, her impeccable sense of style! Here’s how you can capture Julia’s ’90s style vibe for yourself:

1. Mix together different aesthetics

View the original article to see embedded media.

Products: Blazer – Charlotte Russe, Sweater – Gap, Jeans – Nasty Gal, Shoes – Target

Julia loves to mix masculine and feminine pieces for a striking, understated look. She still rocks a good power suit on the red carpet from time to time. But a blazer is a Roberts-approved staple.

The mixed elements of this look are what make it so fun to mess around with. Pairing distressed jeans with a fancy sweater and blazer is just so ’90s. Julia’s fashion kept up with the baggy style that was in. Blazers and jackets weren’t fitted, and pants tended to be bootcut, mom jeans. You could definitely pair this style with sneakers, heels, or pretty much any shoes you’d like; I went for loafers. Traditional loafers have an even more unisex aesthetic which is great for ’90s looks.

2. Think low-key glamour

Products: Top – Forever 21, Pants – Rue 21, Shoes – DSW

Stripes-on-stripes is a pretty tough look to pull off, but if you can channel Julia’s confidence and lovable smile, you can make it work. This look is both laid-back and stylish, and would be perfect for your next vacation. One reason why people love Julia Roberts so much is because she always appears to be having a great time, so put on your biggest smile to truly channel Ms. Roberts.

3. Queen of Sweaters

View the original article to see embedded media.

Products: Dress – American Eagle, Boots – H&M, Bag – Target

One of Julia’s go-to looks during the 1990s was a timeless sweater. She knew how to wear one a thousand ways — with jeans, a maxi skirt, as a dress. Comfy and fashionable is still a Julia Roberts way of life.

Sweater dresses are cute and comfortable. Paired with knee-high boots (and maybe some stockings or tights if you live in a super cold area), they’re an adorable and interesting winter fashion look. Their oversized silhouette matches with the ’90s trend, but updating it with some modern accessories makes the look more wearable today.

Will you be channeling Julia Roberts?

Are you reaching for the curling iron (that is if you’re not naturally blessed with Julia Roberts curls)? Watching Pretty Woman this weekend with your best friends? Let us know in the comments!
